Jim and I decided to go on a cycle camping tour starting off for Ivinghoe hills but before going I had to go into Northampton to buy a few articles. This was on the Saturday evening Aug 2nd and when returning I met Miss Goodyer, one of the girls from the office, near All Saints Church at about 8 oclock I asked why she had not gone on holiday, and she said she was going on the Sunday. As it was rather showery I remarked that I hoped it would keep fine for her, and she promptly told me not to be sarcastic, so I explained that I was going on the Sunday also. I told her that I was going cycling and taking my brother. Miss Goodyer said that she and her mother were going together, also her dog, and that if we went anywhere near we must call. I asked her where she was going and she told me the name of a place in the Chilterns. She said they were going to stay at a pub and told me the name of the pub. I soon forgot the name of the place and the name of the pub. Miss Goodyer then asked where we were going and I told her Ivinghoe near Dunstable to start with and then wander off and try to get lost. She looked at me rather queerly then as Ivinghoe is in the Chilterns. We then went our separate ways and when I got home I looked up on the map the name of the place where Miss Goodyer was going. I thought that the pub was the Crown and that the name of the place began with B. The only suitable place seemed to be Bradenham about 20 miles from Ivinghoe. It also was in the direction that we intended to take so we thought we might as well call.
