Sunday.
Got up when Jim woke and fetched water, made cocoa, shaved, washed and got breakfast. Jim decided he would like tomatoes so I got bacon and tomatoes & fried bread. A lady came along to see if she could be of any help with Jim & as there was nothing she could do, she afterwards sent Jim some chocolate bought with 3d. I took a few photographs & we got on the road about 11 a.m. but in starting I gave a hefty kick & broke two screws. Stopped at a garage just before we got to Newbury, for petrol 2/2 and also got new screws fitted 1/-. Jim went to sleep before we got to Newbury so I kept on until he woke up at Worthy Down. That was at about a quarter to 2 so we had dinner, of fish paste & orange with a drink of Lemon Barley. Wrote a card and posted it in Winchester. We sailed along nicely until we got just through Romsey when I decided to stop near a bridge to wash Jim's face. Just as I pulled up I found the offside front tyre had punctured through a hole in the rim. When this was mended & all hands washed again the engine would not start & after much trying of plugs & contact breaker gaps I found the HT lead broken. This repaired we soon got going again. While doing these repairs a lady with a car parked near by got tea for her husband & two daughters then sent the two little girls with a banana for Jim, much to his delight. A few minutes later they brought some sweets & the man came and tried to help with various suggestions. We then ran in fine style to Sway & found the Sprigg's about 6-30p.m. Had a little chat while Mrs S. took Jim round the garden. Found camping ground & gave Jim tea or supper. He wanted fish paste but soon tired. He had a drink of milk & two bananas. Went up the road for water & milk 3 ½. We had to wait while the cow was milked & the lady of the house marvelled at Jim being out camping so young. Got Jim settled in bed after slight trouble but he soon fell asleep. Retired myself at 9-45. Had had over half a pint of cocoa made with milk but was still so thirsty I fetched the kettle of water & a cup.
Sway is right on the southern edge of the New Forest in Hampshire. The family, through my father's mother, had friends there and I do believe there were realations in that area too.
