This would have attracted Howard's attention because in 1942 he qualified as a member of The National Association of Sotters Clubs and in 1943 was certified as a qualified instructor. As a footnote I can say that I remember travelling to Northampton and being stuck on a high stool at spotting training sessions and if a silhouette was not correctly identified it would be up to me to give the correct answer. Modesty forbids me from saying that in those days (6 or 7 years old) I was pretty good.
